"Plaza de Oriente" due to its location opposite the Royal Palace, this square has always been the scene of historic events; coronations, rebellions and revolutions resulting from the constant political changes taking place in the country. Its creation was the result of efforts by Napoleon's brother to open up a large avenue leading to Puerta del Sol and continuing on down Calle Alcalá in 1811.
The beautiful gardens in this square contain the statues of the Godos kings. A statue of King Felipe IV on horseback stands in the middle.
